One simple step to avoid disaster with pipes bursting is to let water lightly run from the faucet. If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Likely, places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.
The high temperature cutoff switch is designed to prevent the system from overheating, and if it is defective, it won’t allow the water to heat – much like a circuit breaker. To check, go to the electrical circuit breaker box and see if any of the switches have been tripped. If one has, push it back to the “on” position and see if the water is now heating. Once you have filled the tank, open the pressure valve again to allow any excess air to escape. Close the valve and turn on a hot water tap until you are getting a normal water flow.
Water Sediment Within the System
This is a problem for a plumbing specialist to address, since the gas lines will need to be inspected in order to determine what is preventing the gas from reaching the unit. It could be that you have a pinhole leak or a kinked or damaged line. Another possibility that is often simple for homeowners with gas water heaters to address is a blown-out pilot light. In any of these cases, it’s time to get in touch with a plumbing specialist to determine what’s going on.
One of the more common issues that can impact the temperature of the water is the current demand within the household. If this is a common occurrence in your home, then it may be beneficial to invest in a tankless hot water heater that heats the water on demand. Again, homeowners with tankless water heaters won’t have this problem because tankless water heaters only produce hot water when needed, on demand, with zero lag time. Tankless water heaters save homeowners money because they only heat water as it’s being used, opposed to continuously using energy to keep a tank of water warm throughout the day.

Turn off the power going to the water heater at the circuit breaker. If your water tank is leaking, your system may not be able to provide an adequate amount of hot water. You’ll know your system is leaking if there’s a puddle around it. First, confirm that your water heater is the appropriate size for your daily household needs. Is there an issue with your tankless unit’s server or computer?
Reduced Water Pressure
Another type of hot water heater uses electricity rather than gas to heat the water in the tank. This method is more commonly found in smaller models since using electricity to heat water is more expensive that using gas. If there’s no gas leak and you can’t smell rotten eggs, check the water tank for leaks. If it’s leaking, the water won’t have chance to heat up, which could explain the cold water issue. A gas water heater will use a pilot light, while an electric water heater uses an ignition. If your pilot light goes out and can’t be re-lit, there may be a gas issue along the water heater's lines.
These blockages can result from hard water mineral deposits. Moderately hard water has a rating of 3.5 to 7.0 grains per gallon, while hard water has a 7.0 to 10.5 gpg rating. Shower cartridges act like mixing valves as they mix cold and hot water to the desired temperature you set using the shower handle. Shower cartridges are a more modern way of doing things while mixing valves are found in older homes. If the pilot light is damaged or bent, it’ll keep your shower or sink water warm for a few minutes. As the heated water leaves the tank, the poorly-functioning pilot light can’t keep up with the heat demands.
What to Do When Your Hot Water Isn't Getting Hot Enough
Make sure it’s set to a temperature where the water will be hot enough to meet your needs. You may need to adjust the thermostat or change the water heater’s temperature settings or controls. It is possible that there is an issue with the power to your hot water heater.
After all, the system will be working twice as hard to produce hot water. There are several reasons why the hot water could have stopped flowing through your pipes. If the problem is affecting only one faucet or fixture, the issue is likely with that fixture or its supply lines. Water that fails to get hot could also be caused by a clogged filter within the system that is preventing hot water from coming through. Another possibility is that the line bringing hot water from the pipes to the fixture has gone bad, in which case you’ll need to get your supply line fixed.
They can clear the lines before the mineral deposits completely block the flow of water. Let’s say there’s no issue with the thermocouple, but you can’t find a pilot light. A lot of modern heaters don’t have this, as they have a glow plug or a spark igniter instead. In this case, it’s best to contact a professional plumber for help. A hot water heater that is too small will be unable to keep up with the demand for hot water, and the water may only reach certain parts of the house. You may need to install a bigger hot water heater to make sure your entire house has consistent hot water. The next thing to check is if the thermostat is set correctly.
Some homeowners use epoxy as a temporary fix, but this decision leads to bigger leaks and reduced water pressure. If there’s water leaking from the water heater, you’ve likely found the problem. Keep in mind that condensation is natural, but there shouldn’t be liquid dripping from the bottom of the water heater. The dip tube rarely carries hot water, but it’s an essential part of carrying new water to the tank. A broken tube can drop the pressure, which causes additional problems (all of which we’ll cover in the following section).
